What is 4-H?
4-H is a program of Cornell Cooperative Extension which helps youth gain knowledge, self confidence, self esteem and master skills through hands on learning. 4-H youth are guided through projects by adult volunteers. 4-H youth can participate in activities in Schoharie County (dog obedience, Cobleskill Sunshine Fair), at Cornell University (Animal Crackers, Career Explorations), around New York State (Capitol Days, the NY State Fair), and around the country (Wonders of Washington, Citizenship Focus).
Youth who belong to 4-H clubs build social skills, form lasting friendships, and learn from other youth in an informal setting. Clubs can have formal meetings with parliamentary procedure or informal meetings where youth and adults share knowledge and practice skills. Youth who are individual members are encouraged to participate in county wide, state or regional activities.
There is no membership fee to become a 4-H member or Cloverbud. Membership is open to all youth regardless of race, color, sex, national origin or handicap.
The 4-H Club
- Enrollment Begins October 1.
- Members must be 8-19.*
- Clubs start with five members.
- Most clubs meet once a month.**
- Completion of at least one 4-H Project is required in a
4-H year. - Members are required to do one service project per year.
- Clubs are encouraged to participate in one service project each year.
- Club members must have enrollment forms on file with the
4-H Office to participate in activities.
* Youth who are in the third grade and turn nine before the end of the 4-H year, may choose to become a 4-H member or a Cloverbud.
** Clubs must meet at least 6 times per year.
Cloverbud Club
- Enrollment Begins October 1.
- Members are 5-9 years old.
- Most clubs start with five members.
- A ratio of at least one adult for every six Cloverbuds is a must.
- Cloverbud Clubs working with animals and other high risk activities must have a ratio of one adult per youth.
- Most Cloverbud projects are designed to be completed in one session.
- Members should attend at least six meetings.
- Members should complete at least two Cloverbud projects.
- Cloverbuds should participate in one service project per year.
- Members should participate or exhibit project work at the Cobleskill Sunshine County Fair.
- Cloverbud projects entered in the Fair or at Public Presentations receive a participation ribbon.
